Malawi Football fans pay their respects to Esau Kanyenda

Malawian football fans will have an opportunity to follow the burial ceremony of former Malawi National Football Team striker Esau Kanyenda live from the United Kingdom.

Football Legends Association (FLA) General Secretary Gomezgani Mchawi has confirmed that arrangements have been made to install a big screen at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe to allow supporters to watch the proceedings from Manchester, England, where Kanyenda will be laid to rest on February 4.

Mchawi said he has travelled to England to represent the FLA at the burial and disclosed that the bereaved family has honoured him with membership of the burial ceremony’s organising committee.

He added that several Malawians based in the UK, including Acton Munthali, Petros Mwalweni, Chitty Malema, Billy Tewesa, Chikondi Likwemba and Casper Jangale, will also play different roles during the ceremony.

Kanyenda, fondly remembered as one of Malawi’s most prolific strikers, died on December 2, 2025. His burial programme will begin with a church service at 2:00pm Malawi time on February 4, followed by the burial ceremony.
