Mighty Wanderers FC failed to defend their Castel Challenge Cup crown after losing to Mzuzu City Hammers on penalties at Rumphi Stadium.
The match was tightly contested, with both sides putting in a disciplined performance wanderers took the lead in the 50th minute through Isaac Kaliati but hammers struck back in stoppage time through Hassan Luwembe
The match became more dramatic as Mzuzu city Hammers found themselves two men down after Mathews Banda and captain Jimmy Msiska received red cards
Despite the numerical disadvantage the hammers held firm and triumphed 5-3 on penalties completing a stunning victory
Wanderers’ hopes were dented when Stanley Sanudi missed his spot kick, giving Mzuzu City Hammers the advantage in the shootout.
The victory sends Mzuzu City Hammers into the semifinals of the competition, where they are set to face FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in the next round.
