The Malawi Scorchers have been eliminated from the COSAFA Women’s Championship despite securing a 1–0 victory over Angola in their final group match.
The decisive goal came from Ireen Khumalo, who produced a stunning 40-yard free kick. However, the win was not enough to book a place in the next round.
Malawi’s qualification hopes had already taken a major blow after a 2–0 defeat to South Africa in their opening fixture. Their progression ultimately depended on results elsewhere in the group.
The Scorchers needed Zimbabwe and Zambia to play out a draw in their final match to keep Malawi in contention, but the outcome did not go in their favour.
Malawi exit the tournament with a record of two wins and one loss.
Head coach Lovemore Fazili said the team would still take positives from their campaign, which will help them prepare for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco next month.
