Tuchel Drops Big Names as England Prioritise Form for World Cup

Thomas Tuchel who excluded some major names in the England world cup squad Lineup

England manager Thomas Tuchel has sent a strong message ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by leaving out several high-profile stars from his final 26-man squad, choosing current form and tactical balance over reputation.

Among the biggest omissions are Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold, while experienced defender Harry Maguire was also surprisingly excluded despite an impressive season with Manchester United.

Tuchel’s selection reflects a major shift in England’s approach, with the German coach favouring players who have consistently delivered throughout the campaign rather than relying on established names.

The inclusion of Ivan Toney is one of the squad’s biggest talking points. The Al-Ahli striker returns to the England fold after scoring 32 goals in 32 matches in Saudi Arabia, with Tuchel believed to value his physical presence and penalty-taking ability.

Europa League winner Ollie Watkins also secured his place after helping Aston Villa lift European silverware, while Tottenham defender Djed Spence earned a surprise call-up despite recently suffering a broken jaw.

Meanwhile, Tuchel has continued to show faith in key experienced figures such as John Stones and Jordan Henderson despite injury concerns and criticism over their recent form.

The exclusion of Foden and Palmer underlines England’s intense competition in attacking positions. Both players endured inconsistent seasons at club level, opening the door for in-form talents including Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers and Anthony Gordon.

Maguire reacted emotionally to the decision, admitting he was “shocked and gutted” after believing he had done enough to earn a place on the plane.

England will begin their World Cup preparations with friendly matches against New Zealand and Costa Rica before opening their tournament campaign against Croatia on 17 June in the United States.
