Mexico and South Korea Take Early Control as 2026 World Cup Begins

The 2026 FIFA World Cup got underway with two contrasting matches on opening day, as hosts Mexico and an impressive South Korea side secured important victories to make strong starts to their group-stage campaigns.
Mexico Delight Home Fans
Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at the Mexico City Stadium, Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 to begin their tournament on a positive note.
The fixture which was a rematch of the opening match of the 2010 world cup saw both teams try to start the tournament with good Fortune.
Mexico wasted little time asserting their dominance, with forward Julián Quiñones opening the scoring in the ninth minute. The early goal settled the hosts and allowed them to control much of the contest.
South Africa struggled to create meaningful opportunities throughout the match, managing only three shots. South Africa where dealt a heavy blow when yaya Sithole and veteran marksman Themba zeane both received Red cards.
Mexico eventually doubled their advantage in the 67th minute when veteran striker Raúl Jiménez headed home to seal the victory and send the home supporters into celebration.
Mexico day was not all good though because cedar montes also received a red card even with this minor setback mexico held on for a comfortable victory in front of their home crowd
The result places Mexico in a strong position heading into their remaining group fixtures, while South Africa faces mounting pressure to respond in its next match against the Czech Republic.
South Korea Produce Second-Half Comeback

The day's second encounter provided more drama as South Korea came from behind to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1.
After a quiet first half, the Czech Republic broke the deadlock early in the second period when captain Ladislav Krejčí converted a headed effort from a set-piece situation.
South Korea, however, showed resilience and gradually gained momentum. Midfielder Hwang In-beom restored parity in the 67th minute with a composed finish that sparked life into his team's attack.
The decisive moment arrived later in the match when Oh Hyeon-gyu finished off a well-worked move, assisted by Hwang, to complete the turnaround and secure all three points.
Early Group Picture
With opening-day victories, Mexico and South Korea emerge as the early pace-setters in their respective groups. While there is still a long way to go before the knockout stages, both teams have given themselves a valuable platform from which to build.
For South Africa and the Czech Republic, the focus now shifts to recovery and ensuring their World Cup hopes remain alive in the next round of fixtures.
The opening day may have featured only two matches, but it delivered goals, drama, and the first indications of which nations could be ready to make a deep run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
